The R. Smith Colonial Shop was founded in 1944 by Richard Smith, who designed and manufactured upholstered furniture, which was then sold to retail stores throughout New England...as well as direct to customers from his 1840s factory building. Over the years, the retail operation was expanded to include the lines of other local manufacturers including favorites Heywood Wakefield and Nichols & Stone. The showroom became known throughout New England for purveying quality furniture at reasonable prices. Eventually the product lines of other home furnishing and accessory manufacturers asked to be represented as well.
In 1980 the business was sold to Norman Caouette, the owner of a local manufacturing business. The goal of the Caouette family was to continue Richard Smith's dream of presenting regionally-made furniture and related accessories to New Englanders at attractive prices, while continuing in the contract furniture business.
By 1984 the R. Smith upholstery shop was discontinued as the New England furniture industry declined due to lower manufacturing costs in the South. However the retail store continued to grow in popularity.
